What is education about?

We all understand that we learn from an early age. When we are born, we learn based on the environment around us and the way we communicate is by crying or smiling.

As we continue to grow, we learn how to relate to parents, siblings and relatives. We learn by hands-on, having some small accidents and sometimes some that scare parents.

We learn by repetition, what we observe at home we repeat and we we are ready to go to school, we have a lot of information already in our brain and memory which define who we are and the behavior we project.

When we learn we acquire new skills and understanding of them, we also know how to apply those skills to help or provide possible solutions or achieve different goals.

Education is also about forming character and virtue and those values should start at home and continue during the school years in partnership with parents.

The biggest misconception about education is that many parents "assume" that schools are "daycares" and that teachers at school are "wrong" about their children when behavior and academics are not good. Education is a collaboration process between parents and school and to help communication should be an essential part of this process.

Education should be neutral, away from politics and concentrate on developing skills, knowledge, character, and values without bias and providing all students opportunities to flourish and succeed.

Teaching students skills for critical thinking and how to think is important, the information provided will help them discern, debate, and find a common ground to help all have balance in any relationship.

Resources

There are sites that offer resources to help understand how education works. We may agree or disagree with some articles but being informed is important as well as summarize information to be able to have our own personal conclusions that will help provide the best education to our own children and, as a teacher, to our students.
